River Song Music Festival.. Hutchinson, MN … July 15-16th

Hello everyone! After a bit of a hiatus, May had been a really busy/weird month for me, but I am back to try to catch up from last summer’s adventures. So onto the next music festival, I left off on Winnipeg Folk Festival which was such a fun time. Now we are back in the states in the Midwest gearing up for a local festival in Hutchinson, MN. This festival has awesome regional artists and for the most part the whole lineup is Minnesota based artists. As I am writing this back home in Minnesota they are holding this year’s River Song Music Festival in Hutchinson. So sad I am missing it this year but it is fun to reminisce on last year.

This is a two day festival but I decided to just go for one of the days so that I was able to  work some more at my summer job. I was also planning on bikepacking out there and camping at the festival for the night but camping was not included for volunteers so I decided against it. Instead I just drove my camper van out there and then stayed at the local Walmart for the night as I wasn’t planning on drinking. For this festival you volunteer on the day that you would like to get in for free. So I worked the bike check in from 10:30am-2pm on Saturday which was super chill and was just checking in bikes and keeping watch. There was a yoga class in the morning but I missed it as it was during my shift sadly but the older man that was volunteering told me to go join them. It was overall such a fun, chill experience. Once the shift ended I went back to my camper to grab some food and decided to go into town to explore a bit.

I got in my camper and went downtown to do some thrifting and antiquing. They had a pretty good selection out there for shopping but seemed to have fairly short hours so I had to quickly look for some stuff before moving on. After doing a bit of shopping I went back to the site to get all my stuff ready to bring into the festival. The venue was in a small park that was right on the river with two different stages so I decided to bring two chairs, to put one at each stage. Honestly there wasn’t a crazy big crowd so I probably didn’t need to do that but it is better than hauling around a chair from stage to stage. For Saturday the artists I was most excited about seeing were Annie Mack, Chester Bay, & Kiss the Tiger. From what I remember all of these artists were a super fun time and would definitely go out of my way to see them again. Especially Kiss the Tiger who is a super fun rock band that had a ton of energy on stage. They were so awesome live that I ended up getting some of their merch. Once the festival ended I got into my camper and was on my way to the local Walmart where I zonked right out. The next morning I was up and moving before the sun was up to get back home early. The next two weeks I was planning on hanging out in my hometown as I was getting my wisdom teeth out on Monday. Also the craziest thing was the woman that was helping with the procedure saw my River Song music festival wristband and asked if I had gone as she is from Hutchinson, small world!

Now onto rating the festival, how much fun it was, and if I would go back. Honestly this is an awesome music festival that should be selling out with how awesome the lineup is and filled with local artists. But I think (in my opinion) that maybe the location and population of the area is not super interested in this sort of festival. They should get a bike group that bikepacks out there for the weekend, which would be a hoot. All in all I think it is a well run festival that someday I would love to be on the board of! They treat everyone, especially the volunteers with respect and I honestly had such a good time. I plan to attend this festival if I am in the area and free because they support and showcase awesome local artists that I am usually not aware of. For me this festival gets a 7/10!

Thank you for reading! Over the next few weeks I hope to fully finish my summer of music festival blog series.
